In this course, you'll discover that you don't need a powerful laptop and expensive software to create stunning, professional-quality graphics. The smartphone in your pocket is a powerful design studio, and this course will teach you how to use it.\n\nIn our first lesson, we'll introduce you to the essential apps that will form your mobile design toolkit. We'll focus on two powerhouse apps: Canva and Pixellab. While both are used for graphic design, they have different strengths, and understanding them is the first step to becoming a versatile mobile designer.\n\n### Introduction\n\nThe world of mobile design apps is vast, but a few key players stand out.\n-   **Canva:** You may be familiar with Canva from our previous courses. It's a user-friendly, template-driven app that's perfect for creating a wide range of designs quickly and easily, from social media posts to presentations. Its strength lies in its vast library of templates, elements, and photos.\n-   **Pixellab:** Pixellab is a more \"manual\" design app that offers granular control over text, shapes, and 3D effects. It's less about templates and more about creating designs from scratch. It's particularly powerful for typography, logo design, and creating custom graphics.\n\nBy learning both, you'll have a complete toolkit: Canva for speed and templates, and Pixellab for custom control and typography. In this lesson, we'll do a comparative tour of both apps and you'll recreate a simple graphic in each to understand their unique workflows.\n\n### Learning Objectives\n\nBy the end of this lesson, you will be able to:\n-   Understand the different strengths of Canva and Pixellab.\n-   Navigate the basic interface of both Canva and Pixellab.\n-   Add and style text in both apps.\n-   Work with shapes and backgrounds in both apps.\n-   Import images and save your projects.\n-   Recreate a simple graphic to compare the workflow of each app.\n\n---\n\n### Hands-on Project: Recreate a Simple Graphic in Both Canva and Pixellab\n\nYour project for this lesson is to take a simple graphic and recreate it twice: once using Canva, and once using Pixellab. This hands-on comparison is the best way to understand the fundamental differences in their workflows and to see which app might be better for certain tasks.\n\nWe will be recreating a simple \"Quote of the Day\" graphic. It will include a background color, a main text element (the quote), a secondary text element (the author), and a simple shape element.\n\n**Why this project?**\n-   It's a practical way to get hands-on experience with two different apps simultaneously.\n-   It highlights the different approaches to design: template-based vs. from-scratch.\n-   It builds a foundational understanding of each app's interface and core tools.\n\nThis project will give you a solid footing in the two most important apps for any smartphone graphic designer.\n\n### Tools Needed\n\n-   **A smartphone**\n-   **The Canva app**\n-   **The Pixellab app** (available for free on Android and iOS)\n\n### Step-by-Step Instructions\n\nLet's get designing. Here is the simple graphic we will recreate:\n-   **Background:** A solid, dark blue color.\n-   **Shape:** A thin, white, horizontal line.\n-   **Main Text:** \"DESIGN IS THINKING MADE VISUAL\" in a bold, white, sans-serif font.\n-   **Secondary Text:** \"- Saul Bass\" in a smaller, white, serif font.\n\n**Part 1: Recreating the Graphic in Canva**\n\nCanva's workflow is very intuitive and visual.\n\n**Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas**\n1.  Open Canva and tap the **\"+\"** button.\n2.  Choose **\"Instagram Post (Square)\"** for a 1080x1080 pixel canvas.\n3.  Select a blank template.\n\n**Step 2: Set the Background Color**\n1.  Tap on the canvas.\n2.  From the bottom toolbar, select **\"Color\"**.\n3.  Choose a dark blue color from the palette.\n\n**Step 3: Add the Shape**\n1.  Tap the **\"+\"** button in the bottom left.\n2.  Go to the **\"Elements\"** tab.\n3.  In the search bar, type \"line.\"\n4.  Select a simple, solid horizontal line from the graphics results.\n5.  With the line selected, use the toolbar to change its **color to white** and adjust its thickness if necessary.\n6.  Position the line in the center of your canvas.\n\n**Step 4: Add and Style the Text**\n1.  Tap the **\"+\"** button again and go to the **\"Text\"** tab.\n2.  Tap **\"Add a heading\"**.\n3.  Type the quote: \"DESIGN IS THINKING MADE VISUAL\".\n4.  With the text box selected, use the bottom toolbar to:\n    -   Change the **Font** to a bold, sans-serif font (like \"Montserrat\" or \"League Spartan\").\n    -   Change the **Color** to white.\n    -   Adjust the **Font Size** to fill the space nicely.\n    -   Use the **Format** tool to center the text.\n5.  Position this text above the white line.\n6.  Now, tap **\"Add a subheading\"** and type the author's name: \"- Saul Bass\".\n7.  Style this text:\n    -   Change the **Font** to a serif font (like \"Lora\" or \"Merriweather\").\n    -   Change the **Color** to white.\n    -   Make the **Font Size** smaller than the quote.\n8.  Position the author's name below the white line.\n\n**Step 5: Export from Canva**\n1.  Tap the **\"Share\"** icon in the top right.\n2.  Tap **\"Download\"**.\n3.  Choose **PNG** as the file type and tap **\"Download\"**.\n4.  Your first graphic is complete!\n\n**Part 2: Recreating the Graphic in Pixellab**\n\nPixellab's interface is more like a traditional design program, with menus and layers.\n\n**Step 1: Set Up Your Canvas**\n1.  Open Pixellab. You'll start with a default text on a background.\n2.  First, let's set the canvas size. Tap the **three dots** in the top right corner and select **\"Image Size\"**.\n3.  Choose the preset **\"Square\"** or manually enter 1080 for width and 1080 for height.\n\n**Step 2: Set the Background Color**\n1.  On the bottom toolbar, tap the **fourth icon** (the one that looks like two overlapping squares).\n2.  Select **\"Color\"**.\n3.  Choose a dark blue color.\n\n**Step 3: Add and Style the Text**\n1.  You'll already have a \"New Text\" box on your screen. Double-tap it to edit.\n2.  Type the quote: \"DESIGN IS THINKING MADE VISUAL\".\n3.  With the text selected, tap the **\"A\" icon** on the bottom toolbar. This opens all the text editing tools.\n4.  Scroll through the tools:\n    -   Find **\"Color\"** and change the text to white.\n    -   Find **\"Font\"** (Ab icon). Go to the \"Fonts\" tab and choose a bold, sans-serif font.\n    -   Find **\"Size\"** and adjust as needed.\n    -   Find **\"Align\"** and choose the center option.\n5.  Now, tap the **\"+\"** icon in the top left and select **\"Text\"** to add a new text box.\n6.  Edit this text to be the author's name: \"- Saul Bass\".\n7.  Use the same text tools (\"A\" menu) to change the font to a serif font, make it white, and adjust the size.\n8.  Position the two text boxes above and below the center of the canvas.\n\n**Step 4: Add the Shape**\n1.  On the bottom toolbar, tap the **third icon** (the hexagon). This is where you find shapes and other objects.\n2.  Select **\"Shapes\"**.\n3.  A square will appear. In the menu that pops up, you can change the shape's properties. We want a line. While Pixellab doesn't have a dedicated \"line\" tool, we can make one from a rectangle.\n4.  Drag the handles of the rectangle to make it very thin and wide, forming a line.\n5.  Set the **Color** to white.\n6.  Position your new line shape between the two text elements.\n\n**Step 5: Export from Pixellab**\n1.  Tap the **save icon** at the top of the screen (it looks like a floppy disk).\n2.  Select **\"Save as Image\"**.\n3.  Make sure the **Format** is set to **PNG**.\n4.  For **Quality**, you can choose **\"Ultra\"** for the best result.\n5.  Tap **\"Save to Gallery\"**.\n\n### Student Deliverable\n\nYour deliverable for this lesson is the two `.png` image files you created.\n1.  The quote graphic created in Canva.\n2.  The quote graphic created in Pixellab.\n\nPlace them side-by-side and compare them. Do they look identical? Which app did you find easier to use for this task?\n\n### Reflection and Improvement Checklist\n\nLet's reflect on your first experience with these two powerful apps.\n\n-   **Workflow Comparison:** What were the biggest differences you noticed between Canva's workflow and Pixellab's workflow?\n-   **Ease of Use:** Which app felt more intuitive to you as a beginner?\n-   **Creative Control:** Which app do you feel gave you more precise control over the elements?\n-   **Strengths and Weaknesses:** Based on this simple project, what do you think are the main strengths of Canva? What about Pixellab?\n-   **Future Use:** Can you imagine a scenario where you would choose to use Pixellab over Canva, or vice versa?\n\nThis comparative understanding is crucial for a versatile mobile designer. You now know that for quick, template-based designs, Canva is king. For detailed typography and custom graphics from scratch, Pixellab offers more power.\n\n### Conclusion\n\nCongratulations on creating your first graphics in both Canva and Pixellab! You've taken a huge first step by familiarizing yourself with the interfaces and workflows of two essential mobile design apps. You've learned that different apps can achieve the same result through very different processes.\n\nIn the next lesson, we'll move from tools to theory. You'll learn about the fundamental principles of design (like hierarchy, contrast, and balance) and how to apply them effectively on a small screen. Get ready to start thinking like a designer.\n","videoUrl":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10N6v9ymUHE","isFree":true,"locked":false},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_g6vuq31","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ebd","title":"Principles of Design on a Small Screen","type":"video","duration":8,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_o4f2k8t","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ebe","title":"Mastering Typography on Your Phone","type":"video","duration":9,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a33c6c686b85d627e5ee","title":"Module 1: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}},{"id":"module_1766742083192_mk466ql","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ebf","title":"Module 2: Designing with Mobile Apps","lessons":[{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_2c9edz1","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec0","title":"Logo Design with Pixellab","type":"video","duration":9,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_omapy97","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec1","title":"Poster Design with Canva Mobile","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_xd61g1t","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec2","title":"Photo Manipulation and Editing with Snapseed","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a33d6c686b85d627e609","title":"Module 2: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}},{"id":"module_1766742083192_neuwep2","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec3","title":"Module 3: Real-World Mobile Design Projects","lessons":[{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_icsyo9y","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec4","title":"Creating a Simple Ad Creative","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_ioewt8f","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec5","title":"Designing for Social Media Stories","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766742083192_rrj9sux","_id":"694e58445d65808acc6a7ec6","title":"Building a Cohesive Brand Look","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a33d6c686b85d627e624","title":"Module 3: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}}],"price_ngn":12000,"price_usd":0,"published":true,"publishedAt":"2025-12-09T22:31:26.013Z","rating":0,"ratingCount":0,"status":"published","tags":["smartphone-graphic-design-essentials"],"title":"Smartphone Graphic Design Essentials","updatedAt":"2025-12-26T09:41:24.120Z","coverImage":"https://res.cloudinary.com/deyjioiwi/image/upload/v1787260923/course-covers/general/zskb3kstgci1ilb5zu0y.png","promoPrice":10000,"locked":true,"previewLessonId":"lesson_1766742083192_073h0dk"}
