Whether you're a complete beginner or you have some experience with other editing apps, this course will turn you into a confident and capable CapCut editor. In this first lesson, we'll start at the very beginning by getting to know the CapCut interface and mastering the most fundamental skill in all of video editing: the cut and trim.\n\nCapCut is an incredibly powerful and user-friendly video editing app that has taken the world by storm. It's packed with features that allow you to create professional-looking videos right from your phone. But before we can dive into the fancy effects and transitions, we need to build a solid foundation.\n\n### Introduction\n\nThe heart of video editing is the ability to manipulate clips on a timeline. This involves importing your footage, trimming the unnecessary parts, and cutting out mistakes. These basic actions are the building blocks of every video, from a simple 15-second TikTok to a full-length feature film.\n\nIn this lesson, we'll take a guided tour of the CapCut interface. You'll learn where to find all the essential tools, how to navigate the timeline, and how to perform the two most important actions in video editing: splitting and trimming. By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to take a raw video clip and clean it up into a concise and effective piece of footage.\n\n### Learning Objectives\n\nBy the end of this lesson, you will be able to:\n-   Navigate the main features of the CapCut interface.\n-   Create a new project and import video clips.\n-   Understand the function of the timeline, the playhead, and the toolbar.\n-   Trim the beginning and end of a video clip.\n-   Use the \"Split\" tool to cut a clip into multiple parts.\n-   Delete unwanted clips from the timeline.\n-   Perform a basic \"jump cut\" edit to remove pauses and mistakes.\n\n---\n\n### Hands-on Project: Perform a Basic Cut and Trim on a Video Clip\n\nYour project for this lesson is to take a raw video clip and perform a basic \"clean up\" edit. You'll import a video of yourself talking, trim the start and end, and cut out any mistakes or long pauses in the middle. This is the first and most essential step in any editing workflow.\n\n**Why this project?**\n-   It's the most fundamental and frequently used skill in video editing.\n-   It allows you to practice navigating the CapCut interface in a practical way.\n-   It will immediately improve the quality and pacing of your raw footage.\n\nThis project will build your confidence and prepare you for the more advanced techniques we'll be covering in the rest of the course.\n\n### Tools Needed\n\n-   **A smartphone**\n-   **The CapCut app** (Please download it if you haven't already).\n-   **A raw video clip** to practice with. You can film a short video of yourself talking for 30-60 seconds. Don't worry about making it perfect; in fact, it's better if you intentionally leave some long pauses or stumble over your words so you have something to edit out.\n\n### Step-by-Step Instructions\n\nLet's dive into CapCut.\n\n**Step 1: Create a New Project**\n\n1.  Open the CapCut app.\n2.  Tap the big blue **\"New project\"** button at the top.\n3.  This will open your phone's photo gallery. Select the raw video clip you filmed for this lesson and tap the **\"Add\"** button in the bottom right.\n4.  CapCut will now create a new project with your video clip loaded into the timeline.\n\n**Step 2: A Quick Tour of the Interface**\n\nLet's get familiar with what you're seeing.\n\n-   **The Preview Window (Top):** This is where you can watch your video.\n-   **The Timeline (Bottom):** This is the heart of your project. It's where you'll see your video clips, audio tracks, and text layers arranged in sequence.\n-   **The Playhead (The white vertical line):** This line shows you which frame of the video you are currently viewing in the preview window. You can drag the playhead to move through your video.\n-   **The Main Toolbar (Very bottom):** This is where you'll find all your main tools, like \"Edit,\" \"Audio,\" \"Text,\" and \"Effects.\"\n-   **The Secondary Toolbar:** When you tap on a clip in the timeline, a new toolbar will appear with tools specific to that clip, like \"Split,\" \"Speed,\" and \"Volume.\"\n\n**Step 3: Trimming Your Clip**\n\nMost raw video clips have unnecessary footage at the beginning (before you start talking) and at the end (after you've finished). Let's trim these parts off.\n\n1.  **Tap on your video clip** in the timeline. You'll see it becomes highlighted with a white border, and thick white handles appear at the beginning and end.\n2.  **Trim the beginning:** Tap and hold the white handle at the start of the clip. Drag it to the right until the clip begins exactly where you want it to. You can use the preview window to see where you are.\n3.  **Trim the end:** Tap and hold the white handle at the end of the clip and drag it to the left until the clip ends where you want it to.\n\nYou've just performed your first edit! Trimming is a non-destructive way to shorten your clips.\n\n**Step 4: Using the \"Split\" Tool**\n\nTrimming is great for the ends of a clip, but what about a mistake in the middle? For that, we need the \"Split\" tool. This tool acts like a pair of digital scissors.\n\n1.  Drag the playhead to the exact spot right before the mistake or long pause you want to remove.\n2.  Make sure your clip is selected (it should have the white border).\n3.  On the secondary toolbar (the one that appears when you select a clip), tap the **\"Split\"** button.\n4.  You'll see that your clip has now been cut into two separate clips at the location of the playhead.\n5.  Now, drag the playhead to the spot right *after* the mistake.\n6.  Tap **\"Split\"** again.\n7.  You have now isolated the mistake into its own small, separate clip.\n\n**Step 5: Deleting the Unwanted Clip**\n\n1.  Tap on the small clip containing the mistake to select it.\n2.  On the secondary toolbar, tap the **\"Delete\"** button.\n3.  The unwanted clip will be removed, and the two remaining clips will snap together.\n\nThis technique of splitting and deleting is how you create \"jump cuts.\" It's a fundamental technique for making talking-head videos more concise and energetic.\n\n**Step 6: Review Your Edit**\n\nPlay your video from the beginning by tapping the play button in the preview window. Watch the transition where you made your cut. Does it look smooth? Sometimes a jump cut can be a bit jarring, but for most social media content, it's a perfectly acceptable and common editing technique.\n\n**Step 7: Remove the CapCut Watermark**\n\nBy default, CapCut adds a short \"outro\" clip with its logo at the very end of your timeline.\n1.  Scroll to the end of your timeline.\n2.  Tap on the black clip that says \"CapCut.\"\n3.  Tap the **\"Delete\"** button.\n\nThis ensures your final video won't have a CapCut watermark.\n\n**Step 8: Export Your Trimmed Clip**\n\nFor this project, we're just focusing on the edit itself. Let's export your work.\n1.  Tap the **export icon** in the top right corner (it looks like an arrow pointing up out of a box).\n2.  You can choose your resolution and frame rate. 1080p and 30fps are great settings for social media.\n3.  Tap the **\"Export\"** button. CapCut will render your video and save it to your phone's camera roll.\n\n### Student Deliverable\n\nYour deliverable for this lesson is your final, trimmed video clip. You should have an `.mp4` file that is a \"cleaned up\" version of your raw footage, with the beginning and end trimmed and any mistakes or long pauses removed from the middle.\n\n**To complete this lesson:**\n1.  Import your raw footage into CapCut.\n2.  Use the trim and split tools to edit the clip.\n3.  Export the final, edited video.\n\nThis is your first edited video in CapCut! It's a huge first step.\n\n### Reflection and Improvement Checklist\n\nLet's reflect on your first editing session in CapCut.\n\n-   **Interface Navigation:** How comfortable do you feel with the CapCut interface now? What parts are still confusing?\n-   **The \"Aha!\" Moment:** Did you have a moment where the editing process \"clicked\" for you?\n-   **Pacing:** Compare your raw footage to your edited clip. How did the edits affect the pacing and energy of the video?\n-   **Precision:** Was it easy or difficult to make your cuts at the exact right moment? (Hint: you can use two fingers to \"pinch and zoom\" on the timeline to get a more detailed view and make more precise cuts).\n-   **The Workflow:** Do you understand the basic workflow of importing, editing, and exporting?\n\nMastering these fundamental skills is essential. Every other technique you learn in this course will build upon your ability to trim, split, and delete clips.\n\n### Conclusion\n\nCongratulations on completing your first lesson and your first project in CapCut! You've taken a massive step towards becoming a proficient video editor. You've learned how to navigate the app and how to perform the most essential editing actions.\n\nThe skills you've learned today are the 80/20 of video editing. You will use them in every single video you create from now on.\n\nIn the next lesson, we'll build on this foundation by learning how to add and style text overlays and how to incorporate music and audio into your projects. Get ready to make your videos not just look good, but sound good too.\n","videoUrl":"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5_471mO14c","isFree":true,"locked":false},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_l881igp","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de160","title":"Working with Text and Audio","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_sd9zo6s","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de161","title":"Understanding Transitions","type":"video","duration":9,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a2e76c686b85d627dcee","title":"Module 1: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}},{"id":"module_1766697275683_9n1o3xk","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de162","title":"Module 2: Advanced Editing Techniques","lessons":[{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_i1wmzwm","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de163","title":"The Power of Keyframes","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_jklr7ae","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de164","title":"Creating Viral-Style Edits with Overlays and Effects","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_abnsiok","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de165","title":"Mastering Speed Ramping and Beat Sync","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a2e76c686b85d627dd09","title":"Module 2: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}},{"id":"module_1766697275683_ddjmm07","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de166","title":"Module 3: Polishing and Finalizing Your Videos","lessons":[{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_aksqhvf","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de167","title":"Advanced Color Correction and Grading","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_c79nxyp","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de168","title":"Working with Green Screen and Chroma Key","type":"video","duration":10,"content":"","locked":true},{"id":"lesson_1766697275683_chvqgic","_id":"694da97c5d65808acc4de169","title":"Exporting and Sharing Your Masterpiece","type":"video","duration":9,"content":"","locked":true}],"quiz":{"id":"6938a2e86c686b85d627dd24","title":"Module 3: Quiz","description":null,"passingScore":7,"questionCount":10,"questions":[],"locked":true}}],"price_ngn":12000,"price_usd":0,"published":true,"publishedAt":"2025-12-09T22:30:00.653Z","rating":0,"ratingCount":0,"status":"published","tags":["how-to-edit-videos-with-capcut"],"title":"How To Edit Videos With CapCut","updatedAt":"2025-12-27T02:19:41.297Z","coverImage":"https://res.cloudinary.com/deyjioiwi/image/upload/v1787260269/course-covers/general/zxjvomyspvxlyinj8phq.png","locked":true,"previewLessonId":"lesson_1766697275683_ez5fhcr"}
